“Those who think they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God’s action in them find that God’s Spirit is in them—living and breathing God! Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God. Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God. That person ignores who God is and what he is doing. And God isn’t pleased at being ignored. ”  Romans 8:5-8
wow.  I needed to find this.  Hope it blesses you too.  “…attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life.”  amen.

God’s surprises

I love God.  Seriously, when I think about Him, I just am astounded.  He is indescribable, right?  And what He does simply blows me away. Sometimes His activity in my life is more tangible than other times.  I am about to tell you a story – one that I have told many people over the years – because it floors me every time.  I’m warning you it may be a tad long, cause there are details, and I love the details!

Here it goes.  I have told you before about attending camp with the youth from my church.  We go to Student Life camp, and love it. (studentlife.net) Each year, at least one of my own children have been on the trip as well.   Each year, it blesses me, as well as those we take with us.  Several years during the week of camp, I have made life long friends.  The first few times it happened surprised me tremendously.  I mean, here I am a mom, for crying out loud!  And they are so YOUNG.  However, each friendship has been brought to me directly from the hand of God.

One year, a drama ministry formed from several of the SL actors, and they came to serve our youth at church. Now, please know that these young people are absolutely fantastic with their talent, and their passion for God.  And they have such a gift at bringing the two together.  I was astounded from the first time I saw them perform at camp. I was moved by the stories they were able to act out on stage, and somehow it ministered to my soul in a new way.

My student minister asked if a couple of the team could spend the night at my house.  Of course, I’d love to have them……and as I visited with them, I found I had a couple of new friends.  I have so much respect for young men and women who love their God so hard, and love using the gifts He gave them for His glory.  We stayed in touch through emails, etc, and I prayed for them.  Throughout the next few years, I would run into them at camp, or they would come back to our church, and we would reconnect.

Now, jump with me to a women’s event (Women of Faith) I attend with some women I work with.   I was helping out behind a product table, helping women find a resource they would enjoy.  I asked this adorable young lady if I could help her, and as we talked, I found her to be enchanting.  As we talked, I found out she was engaged.  Ordinarily, I am not an overly curious person, but I found myself being led to ask about her fiancee.  I have no idea why, other than God.  Just wait till you hear this!

She starts telling me about him  – he lives in Birmingham, he’s an actor, etc……  I had the funniest sensation in me – like I can’t describe.  Let me just give you the conversation as it played out…..

me: tell me about your fiancee

her: well, he lives in Birmingham, he’s an actor, ……

me: what’s his name?

her: Michael

me: Cleveland?!!

her: YOU KNOW MY MUFFIN?!!!!!

me:  well, I don’t call him “muffin” but yeah…….

LOL!  We squealed so loud, it was just sooooooooo unreal, that out of 28,000 women at this event, I would run into the darling girl who was going to marry my friend!  As we talked, I explained to her that he had indeed been at camp with me, had been at some of our church events, and stayed at my house.  I had the great joy of telling her I had prayed for her.  God.  All God.

We became very fast, very dear friends. They got married, and began their lives together.  I guess the reason I am writing this today is that they were just here.  At my house. Oh, the joy!  God gave us a good long visit, as they drove from Dallas to Louisiana.  We shared simple sandwiches, and lots of conversation.  They are both very passionately pursuing the call God has on their lives.  They are both really really good at what they do.  They are both finding God stretching them, and asking them to step up in their walks with Him.  I probably have not done the whole story justice, but here’s the deal.  God gave them to me, to pray for, to encourage, and be encouraged by, and to share life with.  I love you much, Michael and Courtney, and I love that God continues to allow us to love Jesus together!

I’m sure you have heard by now, the family of Stephen Curtis Chapman has suffered a tremendous tragedy. You can go to his website (stephencurtischapman.com) and follow the links, or go here…….  http://chapmanchannel.typepad.com/inmemoryofmaria/

May God surround them with His comfort and peace, in the midst of this unbelievable suffering.

Lately, I have been thinking of so much to blog about. I’ve been so behind, and I’m sorry.   However, there is no room for any of this today.  Please pray hard for them.  thank you.

Prayer changes all!

I love this entry so much in my devotional, God Calling, that I must share it with you.  Enjoy.

Pray and Praise

I will be much entreated because I know that only in that earnest supplication, and the calm trust that results, does man learn Strength and gain Peace.  Therefore I have laid that incessant, persistent pleading as a duty upon My disciples.

Never weary in prayer.  When one day man sees how marvelously his prayer has been answered, then he will deeply, so deeply, regret that he prayed so little.

Prayer changes all.  Prayer re-creates.  Prayer is irresistible.  So pray, literally without ceasing.

Pray until you almost cease to pray, because trust has become so rocklike, and then pray on because it has become so much a habit that you cannot resist it.

And always pray until Prayer merges into Praise.  That is the only note on which true prayer should end.  It is the Love and Laughter of your attitude towards man interpreted in the Prayer and praise of your attitude towards God.

amen.

last day of school

Yesterday marked a very important day in our family.  My son, Mark, had his very last final!  Ever.  He’s done.  Completed the course, ran the race, finished with flying colors. To the glory of God. What a blessing to this mom. To this family.

As I sit at home this morning, enjoying a day off, he is a few states away spending the very first full day NOT in school…..since he was like five years old!  I am not sure I can even wrap my brain around that!  For almost his whole life, he has been going to school.  Classes.  Learning.  I know at this time of year, many are going through season of graduation from one place to another.  But he’s mine, and this season is now for us, and it feels really big.  So, join me in praying for this marvelous young man as he continues the work he’s already been doing, the job he loves and is so well suited for.  As he continues to listen to the voice of His Lord leading and guiding him.  As he continues to bring joy to those around him.  Mark – I’m so very very proud of you!  I love you soooooooo much.  I can hardly wait to hug your neck on Friday!  Graduation, here we come!!!!

Psalm 118:24
“This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
